Sabrina Estrada Utilizes Career Network To Land Monique Lhuillier Internship

Sabrina Estrada graduated in 2017 with her degree in Merchandise Product Development and through the FIDM Career Network she found paid positions at Monique Lhuillier and Greg Lauren, fashion designer and nephew of Ralph Lauren.

Tell us a little about your internship at Monique Lhuillier: During the last quarter of Merchandise Product Development I dedicated my brand portfolio to Monique Lhuillier. Gratefully, a year later I find myself in the design office creating bridal CAD sketches for the latest collections. I am immersing myself in learning about construction details of certain styles and fabrics. Assisting in fittings and preparing for the new collection has been an absolute dream. At FIDM I recall wanting to always revolve my projects around the Monique Lhuillier brand. I am fortunate to have come across this opportunity through the FIDM Career Network, for I am very excited to learn as much as I can during my time here.

Tell us about your position at Greg Lauren, fashion designer and nephew of Ralph Lauren: I have been fortunate to immerse myself in the production realm of the fashion industry at Greg Lauren as a Production Assistant. Last summer I was curious and excited to cross paths with this opportunity on the FIDM Career Network. I consider myself blessed to have an ongoing internship while I was studying at FIDM. I assisted with the process of adding details to certain styles to achieve a distressed and worn appearance. In addition to this, the team ensured that the styles were suitable for shipping in terms of sewing construction and eye appeal. Soon after my time with the shipping department, I was fortunate to work with the creative cutters. Details are critical and speak to the heart of the brand’s identity. Therefore, the team utilizes vintage materials such as denim, overalls, and army surplus goods to successfully create a garment. I have expanded my knowledge in color, patternmaking, and my eye for detail in preparing complex but beautiful clothing pieces.

How do you feel FIDM prepared you for what you are doing now? The rapid pace to meet deadlines for assignments at FIDM has prepared me to solve issues in an efficient manner. FIDM provided me with courses pertaining to sewing construction, patternmaking, and technical illustration that assisted me to contribute to the success of opportunities in the fashion industry. Maintaining the fire and excitement I felt since my first day as a fashion student has led me to love the process in enhancing certain skills in the industry.

Any advice for current FIDM Students on how to get an internship or a promotion? Perseverance and open mindedness has immensely helped me in seeking internships. I find that curiosity and the willingness to learn will help current FIDM students become successful in the fashion industry. Although you may not be at a certain company or job title you wish to be in, indulging in the present moment and learning everything you possibly can will help you in the future. My first job was at the FIDM Museum Office and certain details I learned from that part of my life has certainly helped me to this day. In terms of being promoted/working in a different department stems from positively working well with others, maintaining a rapid pace, and willingness to accept any project given.

What is your biggest goal right now? I believe my purpose is to help others in any way possible. My first love is design and I plan to own my own brand one day that contributes to those who are not fortunate to have durable clothing. I am grateful for the opportunity to attend FIDM and study what I am passionate about. Many people do not have the resources to achieve their goals. I hope to inspire others, provide education, and basic needs to those who need it the most. My goal is to help people through the funds of my clothing brand. I believe that opportunities come to us for a reason and it is in our hands to make the best out of it.

Anything else you’d like to share? In my perspective our time is the most expensive asset we own. Grasping onto opportunities will lead you to new experiences, creative souls, and a strong work ethic. Never allow fear to keep you from seeing the potential that will lead you to exponential success. Remember to enjoy every step of the way!
